Why study Arts & Design?  What Can You Do With an Art & Design Degree?

Description and subfields

Knowing that the art career holds a broad field of subjects, professionals tend to choose a specific concentration to hone and grow their skills that fit well for the called upon the industry.

Art and Design harbour majors such as art history, interior design, illustration and much more. Studies within this field focus on different visual media outlets such as painting, drawing, sculpting and graphic design. The essential knowledge you will acquire from an Arts & Design major are design principles, colour theory, critical thinking and artistic techniques.

Reasons to major in Arts & Design

Well, to say the least, it allows for an enriching experience of studying while at school and prepares students for life after school. Arts subjects encourage self-expression and creativity. Therefore, this allows for a building of self-confidence and a sense of self-identity. Arts and design help build creativity; this will help with well-being and improve health and happiness by acting as an outlet for releasing pressures of studies and stressors in everyday life. And what better way to venture into a field that helps you release stress?

It provides you with freedom.

Art and design allow for critical thinking and the ability to interpret the world around us. There is a sense of freedom just due to the mere fact that all one would need is to sit down and do work. No one indeed directs you, but there is an array of options of ways to go through their art. There are many sources of inspiration, whether it is music, friends, family or even the scenery right out the window. As Cate Blanchett said, “Art is a non-pre-prescribed dangerous world full of possibilities,” and to add on this, they are never endless!

New skills

Art and design call for a means of interaction. This could apply to students and teachers or students and commentators. The tutor is a means of bouncing ideas off rather than telling them what to do. It provides the opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge of different art forms, media, and techniques. You can also gain specialist skills in areas such as photography, film, and digital technologies.

Culture

Another reason is the culture. The heritage of arts and design differs from one culture to another and plays a vast and distinct feel. Art galleries across different nations harbour a sense of identity to every artist. The leading indicator is culture.

Opportunities

Art and design offer a diverse range of study topics, including sculpture, theatre, and fashion. The diversity allows the students the opportunity to remain engaged and follow their passion. Aside from that, it builds room for creativity, not to mention transferable skills. Those who can witness paintings and sculptures are enabled to think outside of the box they were in. It allows for room to understand another human being, dissecting the way of the brush strokes and colours of paint are used to represent an idea or topic.

According to the BLS Statistics, employment in arts and design occupations will grow 4% from 2020 to 2030. Around 37,000 new jobs are in the works to be added (2021).

Architecture, Art and Design share a commonality in the sense that creativity lays as a foundation. Being able to express through physical being not only word of mouth allows for complete encapsulation of a person. It helps represent them in every art form presented.
