Additional fees information:
Independent Distance Learning only. The programme is made up of eight taught courses (and a dissertation on the MSc programme). The fee for optional courses Practical Skills in Marine Surveying and Marine Resource and Sustainability is £1460. The fee for optional course Tropical and Coral Reefs: Monitoring and Management is £1980. The fee for these courses is higher as they include field trips. The fee for all other courses is £1110. The dissertation fee is £1510.
Semester start dates:
There are at least two semester intakes per year for online programmes, in September and January. For a select number of programmes, there is an additional intake in May.
It will clearly specify at the top of your programme web page what intakes are available.

- 10 May 2021 (open to selected programmes.)
- September 2021 (open to all programmes)
When to apply:
There are two intakes for most online programmes each year. For a small number of programmes Heriot-Watt also offers a third intake in May. There are deadlines associated with each intake. Dates vary each year, but normally fall close to the below:
- September intake deadline is 15 August
- January intake deadline is 15 November
- May intake deadline is 15 April
Applications received after these dates will still be considered but we cannot guarantee a place for the upcoming intake. Therefore, the offer to study may be made for the following intake.
Entry Requirements:
Applicants to the MSc programme will normally
-
have a good undergraduate degree (minimum 2:2 honours or equivalent) in engineering or a relevant science discipline, or
-
demonstrate equivalent academic ability based on industrial experience or membership of a professional institution
As part of the eight taught courses on the International Marine Science MSc, Heriot-Watt online students must first take exams in two courses of the programme, Climate Change and Environmental Processes. Based on the results from these courses students continue on the programme at MSc or at PG Diploma level.
English language requirements
If English is not the applicant’s first language a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required with all elements passed at 6.0 or above.
Applicants who have previously successfully completed courses delivered in the medium of English language may be considered and will be required to provide documentary evidence of this. Examples would be secondary school education or undergraduate degree course. A minimum of at least one year of full time study (or equivalent) in the medium of English language will be required.
Heriot-Watt offers a range of English language courses to help you meet the English language requirement prior to starting your masters course:

14 weeks English (for IELTS of 5.5 with no more than one skill at 4.5);

10 weeks English (for IELTS of 5.5 with minimum of 5.0 in all skills);

6 weeks English (for IELTS 5.5 with minimum of 5.5 in reading & writing and minimum of 5.0 in speaking & listening)
Online Learning students
Please note that Online Learning students who access their studies online will be expected to have access to a PC/laptop and internet.
